The Demodara Loop, which is the track passes under itself, going

around the loop and emerges from no 41 tunnel. Loop is about 900 m long. The station situated exactly over

the tunnel. Also that’s center of the crossing point on the top of the loop. This type of loop is known as “spiral loop” or “circular loop”. In Sri Lanka, sometime called as “Demodara looping the loop”.

ravana-s-caveThe Rawana Ella Cave is located about 2 km from the picturesque town of Ella. It is quite a small cave, measuring about 50ft wide, 150ft long and 60ft high. However, once inside one can find several others that run 20 to 40 ft deep into its walls. Like the Sthripura Cave in Welimada, legend has it that it was used by King Rawana to hide the Princess Sita. It is also thought to be connected to the cave at the Dowa rock temple in Bandarawela (part of King Walagamba’s famous ‘tunnel network’). Archaeological findings include a human skull dating back to 20,000 BC. The famous Ravana Ella Cave lies 1,370 m (4,490 ft) above sea level on the foundation of a cliff. The cave is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, located 11 km (7 mi) away from Bandarawela.

Dowa templeDova temple is believed to be constructed during King Walagamba’s era. Ancient legends reveal this cave as a secret hiding places for the king during enemy attacks. Later he instructed a person called “Kumbaltissa” to construct a temple here as a Buddhist monastery. Little Adams Peak is communally known as “Punchi Sri Pada”.It is named after the sacred Adams Peak (Sri Pada –where the foot print of Lord Buddha is preserved) regarding the similarity between the two mountains. Therefore the mountain was called as Little Adams Peak. It is 1141 m in height. With an easy hike up to the mountain of Little Adams Peak you can consummation a worth panoramic view. You have to walk through green tea plantations to get there. It will take around 35-45 min to reach to the top of the mountain on a zig- zag path. Thus it is an ideal place to watch sun rise in the morning. With prodigious views of as far as Ella rock and down to the gap will be gorgeous.

Nine archThis viaduct was built at Gotuwala between the two railway stations – Ella and Demodara during the British Colonial period is the largest in Sri Lanka. Located almost 3100 feet above the sea level, this 99.6ft high bridge is called “Ahas namaye palama” (Nine skies bridge) in Sinhala. When one stands underneath it and looks up there is a beautiful sight of ‘nine skies’ through the nine arches, hence the Sinhala name. This bridge is also called ‘The Bridge in the sky’ due to the sheer hight. This massive bridge is built entirely of solid rocks, bricks and cement without using a single piece of steel. The bridge was finally commissioned in 1921.
